It is absolutely essential to have one of these (or a similar tool) to remove a Moen 1222 cartridge. The tool made easy work of taking out the 14 year old cartridge so that I could slide in the replacement.

After reading all the other reviews I was convinced that a puller would be required to replace the 4 Moen cartridges at my home . They were original (30+ years of service so it past time for replacement). Danco does a dis service to their product as it was certainly designed to be adequate for the task and heavy enough to stand up to the required stress and pressures.
However the directions of use were essentially useless. First of all the screw that needs to be threaded into the old cartridge stem was shipped so tight to the tee handle that I had to put it in to a vise to break it loose. After looking at its design as to how it will need to function it turned out to be important as to how it was initially mounted on the old cartridge stem.
The tangs of the puller must be placed in between the old cartridge tangs.
And before you screw in the screw that goes thru the tee handle into cartridge stem it works best to pull the stem out as far as it will go (open position)
with a channel locks. Then while holding the tee handle horizontal screw it to the stem that goes inside it.
Now hold the tee handle stationary while you slowly turn the 1.25 nut clockwise (looking down) while making sure the puller is perpendicular and flush to the top of the faucet. I found it best to use a large 1.25 box wrench to turn the nut. Turn slowly and follow this procedure you will be successful every time.

I bought this tool because it was listed as a Moen 104421. I received a product marked 08-0423 in a package marked Quality Repair Parts. I seems to be the same as the Danco puller. I have no problem with the tool but it is not what is listed in the description. I paid a premium in order to get an original Moen product but I did not get a genuine Moen product. Wholesale Plumbing sells this same item on eBay with a clear description that it is not a Moen product.
